Canelo Alvarez may be the underdog on Saturday night when he faces Floyd Mayweather, but the young Mexican superstar has thus far gone undefeated as a pro, racking up a 42-0-1 (30 KO) record along the way, and rising to the upper echelon of the sport's biggest names.
Below, relive Canelo's last three victories over Shane Mosley, Josesito Lopez, and Austin Trout.
May 5, 2012 vs Shane Mosley (UD-12): Alvarez had been taking some heat for his level of opposition, and that didn't end when he was signed to face Mosley, an aging, faltering fighter whose best days were clearly in the increasingly distant past. But however you slice it, Alvarez physically dominated Mosley over the entirety of the fight, hurting the iron-chinned Sugar Shane a few times and winning on scores of 119-109, 119-109, and 118-110. So thorough was Canelo's domination that Mosley announced a retirement shortly after, which didn't last long, like most boxing retirements.
September 15, 2012 vs Josesito Lopez (TKO-4): On one of the biggest boxing nights of 2012, Sergio Martinez beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in an HBO pay-per-view main event at a sold-out Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas. So strong was Canelo's drawing power, though, that he also sold out in Vegas that night, beating a physically overmatched Josesito Lopez at the MGM Grand, in his Showtime debut.
April 20, 2013 vs Austin Trout (UD-12): When Austin Trout beat Miguel Cotto in December 2012, it hurled a wrench into the plans to stage a Canelo-Cotto fight in spring 2013. But instead of still facing Cotto -- an idea Richard Schaefer tried to float as acceptable -- or taking a lesser opponent, Canelo demanded and received a fight with Trout, a tricky southpaw that no one was really dying to face. Trout had some success in the fight, but was also put on the canvas in the seventh round on a hard right hand. Alvarez won on scores of 115-112, 116-111, and a definitely too wide 118-109.
